CC-1141 VPI VERSATILITY

Selecting the correct VPI resin for customers can be a very difficult task. Many times it is difficult to find the right product that will give the customer all the right features they are looking for in a VPI resin. One Dolph product that is overlooked is CC-1141.

For VPI, CC-1141 offers many beneficial features. This product is an epoxy-polyester material. This fact alone will give the combination of a product that has the chemical resistance of epoxy along with high temperature performance of polyester.

In relation to most VPI resins, CC-1141 has a viscosity (1,500-3,000cps) that allows for excellent penetration. At the same time it also allows for substantial film build, approximately 1.5 to 2.5 mils per side.

This resin is also very environmentally friendly. Average VOC levels are about one pound per gallon, well under the requirements of any municipal requirements we are aware of in the USA.

CC-1141 also has a flash point of over 200° C. The monomer used in this product is diallylphalate (DAP). Products that use other monomers such as styrene and vinyl toluene (VT) have flash points at a maximum of 135°C. This flash point temperature difference has several advantages. First, it allows the resin to be shipped as a non-hazardous product. Freight rates will be lower for such products. Secondly, this higher flash point has positive advantages for many areas on insurance rates because the possibility of a fire is obviously lower.

CC-1141 is also very stable in VPI processing equipment with chilled holding tanks. Gel times of this DAP monomer chemistry are typically double that of styrene and vinyl toluene monomer products. This allows CC-1141 to be very stable in motor repair and aftermarket environments, as well as manufacturing environments. We have seen instances with competitive materials where stability issues have developed. The styrene and VT monomers require higher turnover in order to maintain stability.

Bond strength is another area that CC-1141 excels. Helical Coil bond strength is rated at 15 pounds to break at 150° C. You will find that most other polyester resins in styrene and VT, as well as most epoxies, have 3-10 pounds to break at this temperature.

Along with all these mechanical and environmental advantages, don't forget electrical performance. Dielectric strength to ASTM D115 is 4000 volts per mil.

Another advantage of this product for OEM applications is that Dolph has UL recognized systems available up to 220° C. These systems offer excellent choices in both major and minor insulations. Dolph also has a UL approved lab that can offer customers assistance with any sealed tube test requirements that they may have.

In conclusion, keep CC-1141 in mind when discussing new resin opportunities. It is a resin that can offer many positive advantages to competitive offerings. Data sheets and MSDS sheets are available by request through our website or by calling our customer service group.
