Insure that the sample to be measured is properly prepared.
Be sure that the dip cup is clean.
Gently lower the cup into the test material so that the cup rim is completely submerged.
Determine and read the temperature of the test material confined in the cup and remove the thermometer.
Hold cup vertically by inserting index finger under handle. In a quick, steady motion, lift the cup out of the sample material, starting the timer when the cup breaks the surface. During the flow time, hold the cup no more than 6" above the level of the sample material.
Stop the timer when the first definite break in the stream at the base of the cup is observed.
Record the cup type, name, and number, measured temperature, and efflux time in seconds. For best accuracy average three or more readings.
Promptly clean up the cup giving special care to the orifice.
